The work of Herbert Matter for Knoll |
A friend took me to a docoumentary movie last night called The Visual Language of Herbert Matter. I did not know anything about this guy previously, however now I do.
Herbert Matter was a Swiss-born graphic designer and photographer who made his name in the USA. He pioneered the use of photomontage in commercial art and worked with the likes of Vogue, Harpers Bazaar as well as Charles and Ray Eames. He has a great portfoilo of work, including stunning posters for Swiss tourism and a stint as a design consultant for Knoll from 1946 and 1966. He designed the Knoll logo, advertisments, posters and their catalogues. The graphics are appealing, modern and visually lasting. I was very impressed and it was great to learn about him and his work.
