Featured Fab Fabric of the Day

Inspiration for a design has to come from somewhere.  A dining room for one particular client, inspiration came from the early 1900's black & white framed photos of Colorado Springs, hanging on a wall.  Seeing the range of the tones and textures, bringing the outdoors into this formal space was all of the inspiration needed.

Inspiration Is All A Twitter

Snob Inspired Designs

The beginning stages of any design needs to begin somewhere.

For one Dining Room I found inspiration in the black & white photos of Colorado Springs from The early 1900's the client had hanging on a wall.

Sepia tones are always a favorite.  Natural elements, a beaded placemat and a votive candle pull together and express the inspiration nicely.

Fabrics and wall colors complement each other.

Paint colors are Sherwin Williams and fabrics are Wesco Fabrics.

If you're feeling inspired, you can ordere these fabrics today.

Sites Seen in Scottsdale

While in Scottsdale last month I had the opportunity to see some extraordinary and inspirational design at restaurants and resorts.

The first day I arrived in Scottsdale, my client I had lunch at Olive & Ivy Restaurant & Marketplace.  Absolutely delicious Mediterranean and Californian cuisine.
The ambiance and decor is beautiful.
Love the multiple glass pendant lights hanging overhead.  How often do you see bullion fringe around the base of the booth?

I am known for taking pictures in restrooms, even ones that I am not remodeling.
The textured tile on the wall and the large stall doors make a real statement.

The pop of green on this wall in Desert Ridge Resort is so pretty.  It really inspired my client to incorporate green in her Condo.
The floor is spectacular!  The solid colors on the walls and lack of texture allow for the floor design to pop.

Then you look up at the restaurant sign, large pendant light and again green on the ceiling, great presentation.

I look forward to my next trip to Scottsdale for other hot spots I already have on my agenda.

 Sites that inspire.

Finding Images for Inspiration

A great bedroom inspiration from House to Home.

How about a traditional hallway?

Are you after a modern home office?

Or a rustic kitchen?
One thing that is important for a client to have when they meet their designer is images to show what they love, what they aspire to for the proposed design work. I know that I have occasionally tried to work with a client who hasn't shown me any images/ideas and it hasn't work as we'll be visualising completely different concepts. It's essential that the designer and client are on the same page - so in saying that, here is a great website with lots of inspirational images for you to choose from. It's called House to Home and it is a photo library/gallery of seven UK magazines - including Living Etc and Homes and Gardens. So if you're after some visual inspiration, check this out. There is every style possible in kitchens, bathrooms, living rooms, bedrooms, hallways, home offices and the list goes on. Photographs via House to Home.

Inspiration - La Bastide de Marie

La Bastide dde Marie Hotel in Menerbes, France

One of my new clients is inspired by the French Farmhouse and she would like to create a modern and eclectic version of this for her home. Researching French Provence-style farmhouse, I came across this hotel via Habitually Chic.
La Bastide de Marie is a hotel in a 18th Century building based in Menerbes, Provence. Surrounded by vineyards and beautiful gardens, I have taken some of the interior influences to inspire this project. Read Habitually Chic's posting on it here and see the Vogue shoot that had actress Marion Collitard posing in this very hotel.

The Single Girl and Style

I love watching old movies from the 40's, 50's and 60's. Not only is it a joy to watch such amazing actors with successful careers before my time, but the clothing and set designs bring me great pleasure and inspiration to my work.

A few days ago I watched the 1964 film Sex and the Single Girl with Natalie Wood, Tony Curtis and Henry Fonda. Natalie Wood is absolutely adorable playing a young, beautiful psychologist whose written a book about sex and the single girl.

Her black and white office is as sophisticated as she is. Not only does Natalie Wood show some leg in the movie, the furniture throughout each set shows a quite a bit of leg in fact.

The classic black and white stripes work perfectly on the window treatments, chair and the chaise lounge her clients lay on while the psychologist listens to her patients.

I put together a bedroom and Office in black and white with furniture and accessories found present day from Hickory Chair, Global Views and CR Laine. I added a few more black and white patterned fabrics just for a little added texture rather than just the black and white stripes seen in the movie.

I hope you find inspiration to watch the movie if you have not seen it.

Inspiration - Chocolate Brown Squares

From India Hicks 'Island Life'
Brown and white square flooring
Mosaic tiles from Bisazza
After looking at India Hick's interiors last week, I had been admiring the chocolate and white pattern on her chairs. Surprisingly I came across the similar pattern as flooring. Wondering if I could do this pattern with tiles, I found the Bisazza example. It's rather effective, isn't it? I wonder if my client will like this idea...

Inspiration - India Hicks' Island life

I started another new job last week and this particular client is inspired by India Hicks' Island Life.
A great society beauty, India Hicks is the grand-daughter of British icon, Lord Mountbatten and daughter of design icon, the late David Hicks - so clearly British tradition and design is in the blood.
India and her family are based in the Caribbean and it is her homes and other interiors that this book is based on. The interiors demostrate a combination of the Caribbean's informality and simplicity along with the classic British good taste. I think it works well.
