My DIY Greek Key Bench

Two DIYs in one week? Moving really has me on the ball people.
Today I bring to you the story of a bench.
^ Here is what it looks like now. I use it as a coffee table/ottoman in front of my couch, but it could easily go at the foot of a bed or in a front foyer! I love how versatile a good bench is.

Let's travel back in time to July, 2011 to see what the piece used to be:
Picked this baby up at Good Will for $4. It was chipped, bubbling and a strange height for a coffee table. But I saw the potential of those great legs (and yes, it took me over a year to finish even start this one).

The First step was to remove the top of the table:
^ It was attached with these L-brackets that easily unscrewed.

Next, I used the top as a template to cut out the 2inch upholstery foam that would sit on top to form the cushion of the bench.
I cut out the foam with a serrated knife and used spray adhesive to attach it to the table top. I did the same for a layer of cotton batting.
^Since my bench is four feet long, I ordered 2 yards of fabric and cut it down to size.
The fabric I chose was 'Greek Key, Buff' from Tonic Living.

Then, with the help of my parents, I staple gunned the fabric to the underside of the table and reattached the top. Oh and I also painted the base of the bench white!

I'm so pleased with the end result. The entire project cost me around $40. I had the paint leftover from an old project so that kept costs low, but it required very little paint!
Then, on a trip to Home Sense, I was even more pleased when I spotted this:

The EXACT same fabric on a similar looking bench for 200 dollars!

Pretty amazing if you ask me!

Favourite Furniture Fridays: Hello Lovely

For Today's Guest Post we Have the darling Sarah from Hello Lovely. This girl is seriously my blog twin, separated at birth.

Hello Lovelies! I am so happy to be here with you today! I adore Tiffany's blog so this is so exciting for me! Yay! I have also read some of your sweet comments so I know she has some pretty awesome followers! Today I'm going to share my favourite furniture piece from my home. When Tiffany first asked me, I really had to think, hmmm what is my favourite piece!?! I am very picky, so unless I LOVE it, I don't have it in my home...but I think if I had to choose one thing, it would be my coffee table.
Our little coffee table almost didn't make it here though....My Husband and I actually went searching for an ottoman. I thought it would be more comfy and relaxed for our living room. We searched high and low and finally found one. We drove over an hour to get this ottoman. I was so sure this was it. Until....I.saw.it.

A shiny sparkler out of the corner of my eye. My Husband thought I was nuts. I was going on and on about the ottoman and now here I was dying over this coffee table! We decided that we came for the ottoman, it was the perfect one we had been searching for, so we bought it. There, done. That night we sat down to watch Sarah's House Season 4 and there.it.was...MY COFFEE TABLE!!!

It was a sign from Sarah herself! I made the wrong choice! Let's just say I could NOT sleep that night. All I could think about was that darn coffee table! I woke up and called the store as soon as it opened and luckily they let me change my order! A few weeks later this little beauty was in our living room and I have loved it ever since. Hope you like it too!
 xoxo, Sarah
When Sarah Richardson speaks, we all listen! I love this glam little coffee table, especially those dainty caster feet! Great find Sarah, and thank you for sharing. Don't forget to check out Hello Lovely for yourselves!

Chess Board Coffee Table

I've had this picture saved for awhile now, and I just can't seem to get this coffee table out of my head. It looks like a giant chess board almost...only way more chic. I love it, do you?

Coffee Table Dilemma

I think coffee tables are much more difficult to style than bookshelves.

There's usually a lot going on in a bookshelf; and if a few of the items are not the greatest, the collection will carry those mediocre pieces.

Not so with the coffee table - more like putting an item on a pedestal.

It really becomes a focal piece.

When I'm styling a home, I always select a couple of the most interesting accessories for the coffee table.

Then, I fill in with some interesting, beautiful books.

Something fresh also is a nice touch.

Remember, accessories on a coffee table need to look great from any angle (i.e., not a picture frame).

Think about this the next time you are looking for something special for your coffee table.

Have a marvelous day! M.

Double Take - Square Coffee Table

This past Spring, my Mother was freshening up their beach place and somehow I ended up with this coffee table [it had a smoky glass top which shattered on the way to the car - oops].

She said, "Maybe you could use it in an empty staging project." Well, at first I thought, "Not in this lifetime!" Then I thought, "The 1980's called and want their coffee table back."  But as the table sat in our garage, I began to appreciate the lines of the piece and came up with a solution to repurpose it.  So, here is the after (it now lives in our family room).

Needless to say, my Mom wants it back now!

[BTW, yes that is a very large TV in a very large black hole above our fireplace, and yes, it is on the list!!  When I get the green light from the hubs to remodel that area, I will post pictures!]

Hepburn Coffee Table from Antipodes Design

Hepburn Coffee Table
Hepburn in light oak.
I have been quiet on the posting front this week as I have been tied up with 292. I am about to move in and it has been taking up all my spare time.
However, today I was able to order the Hepburn Coffee Table for a client of mine. This is from the Antipodes Design store - an Auckland based furniture showroom who favours local design. The founder of Antipodes Design is Rod Hanna, who is also behind the Designers Collection furniture range.
The coffee table is 1500mm long, 700 wide and 400 high - however, it can be requested in any size. We're going for the dark stain as like the top photo. So classic and stylish.
