Favourite Furniture Fridays: IKEA ALEX drawer unit with casters

{I'm beginning to think I should retitle this series 'Ikea' Furniture Fridays, I love so many of their items! But I like alliteration...so the title stays!}

Today the piece I'm featuring is the ALEX drawer unit with casters. Chances are you've seen this piece (and maybe didn't even realize it)!

Visually inspiring storage solutions

Since I came back from Paris, I have been obsessed with storage and streamlining our home. We are lucky to have a nice, spacious home and nonetheless, there is always stuff lying around so next weekend, I'll be tackling Mila's bedroom.
I have accepted a longtime ago that I can not win against the constant invasion of pink, plastic toys which turn up in our home without me buying them but I have not given up and I will find a solution that works for both of us, which means that it will be easy and practical for her to put her toys away while looking visually inspiring for me and I think boxes like these below could just be what we need. I especially love the use of MT masking tape to mark the content of each box while adding a touch of creativity...If anyone is up to a trip to Ikea with me this week...

Depuis que je suis rentrée de Paris, je suis obsédée par le rangement. Nous avons la chance d'avoir une jolie maison et pourtant, il y a toujours des trucs qui trainent partout donc le weekend prochain je m'attaque à la chambre de Mila. 

Cela fait longtemps que j'ai accepté que je ne gagnerais pas contre cette invasion constante de jouets en plastic rose qui arrivent a la maison et que je n'achète meme pas mais je n'ai pas dit mon dernier mot et je finirais par trouver une solution qui marchera pour toutes les deux. Une qui sera facile pour que Mila puisse ranger ses jouets facilement et qui sera pour moi agréable a regarder et je pense que ces boites sont peut-etre exactement ce dont nous avons besoin.

J'adore l'utilisation du masking tape japonais pour marquer le contenu de chaque boite et qui en meme temps ajoute une petite note de créativité à l'ensemble. Si ca branche quelqu'un de venir a Ikea avec moi cette semaine...

Vintage filing cabinet love

Thank you for your lovely comments over the weekend...My Dad goes in hospital on 8th, will know better then.

A few years ago, Elodie sourced a beautiful vintage filing cabinet which successively has been used in her home as a kitchen cupboard (in Lille), a shoes cupboard (in Barcelona) and is now being used as a filing cabinet to store all the family papers in Paris. Eventually I found one for our home and this month, I also found one for the shop.

Last year, while Mila and I were making cards, I also made labels and allocated one drawer per family member including Lucas, which now allows me to store all our paperwork (bills, mortgage infos, insurance, Mila's drawings, Lucas' vet details etc) in one place rather than having them spread around the house... total bliss and it looks good!

Now that all our papers are sorted, the next thing I want to do is a gorgeous moodboard on the wall with masking tapes like Tine K did in her home (pic 1).

Il y a quelques années, Elodie trouva un très joli meuble de rangement en métal qui a été successivement utilisé comme placard de cuisine (à Lille), placard à chaussures (à Barcelone) et qui maintenant sert de meuble de rangement pour tous leurs papiers à Paris. J'ai fini par en trouver un aussi pour notre maison et ce mois-ci j'en ai également trouvé un pour B&F

L'année dernière, lorsque Mila et moi faisions des cartes, j'en ai profité pour faire des étiquettes et alloué un tiroir pour chaque membre de la famille, Lucas y compris, ce qui me permet maintenant de ranger tous nos papiers (factures, prets, assurances, les dessins de Mila, les trucs du vétérinaire pour Lucas, etc) dans un seul endroit plutot que d'avoir des papiers éparpillés dans la maison... que du bonheur et en plus c'est beau!

Maintenant que tous nos papiers sont triés, ce que j'aimerais faire c'est un beau moodboard avec du masking tapes comme Tine K l'a fait chez elle (pic 1).

Room of the week!

I guess I should re-phrase that to "moment" of the week. I love this dressing table and can only dream of having the time to sit and powder my nose and get ready someday. I'm usually lucky to throw an outfit together while watching my little one tear through my shoes. ;)

Decisions, decisions

Isn't this a great idea?? If you have the extra space {or closet} why not convert it into a dressing nook? I would also add drawers for all my baubles, bags and scarfs. I love the framed couture fashion bags too. {which I'd better frame, because I can't say that I can afford much from Hermes or Prada.} How cute would this look painted a light shade of pink or better yet wallpapered in something simple but glamorous. I've been slowly transforming my bedroom into a feminine retreat. I can't wait to share the finished shots but for today I have a question. I have a white lacquered tray, and plan to collect my perfume and creams in it.  I usually only own one or two fragrances at a time. I'm looking to make some fresh changes in my life, so buying a new fragrance seemed like a no-brainer to me, {especially because my husband gave me the one I currently use} turns out it isn't. Here are three of the contenders below. I actually wear Hanae Mori now. It has a very clean scent. I know fragrances are quite personal but I'm stuck, and thought who better to ask then my fabulous readers, so what is your favorite fragrance?

Choices...

I'm not too keen on freezing my tail off, there's really nothing fun about winter. {esp. this winter} With the exception of skiing on a perfect sunny, fresh powder day or the first fresh snow I'd take our three other seasons any-day. I'm surviving this especially long winter with small projects. I can't drop a ton of cash on large renovations nor do I plan on staying in this current house for too long so instead I'm working on small projects that can easily come with me! {besides a little painting}. Next up: organizing my jewelry collection. I love both ideas shown here, but I might opt for hiding some of my treasures in a small vintage table, and the rest on top of my dresser {away from curious, tiny hands}. I adore the coral, tray and bust idea in Susanna Salk's house, shown above.. via Rue Magazine

Ikea also sells lucite trays with dividers, that may do the trick!

Firewood

While I was in Atlanta and staying at my brother's, he got some firewood delivered. And by "some" I mean an ass-load (pardon me). He was nice enough to load up my car with all it could carry (without bottoming out) on the drive back to Charleston. But now I am trying to figure out what to do with it all! I LOVE a fire and LOVE that I have a real fireplace (there ain't nothing like it!) and I have fires often but until I can burn the wood, where do I keep it all???

I typically buy two bundles at the grocery and keep it in my old wood crate like so...

Crates full (said like Cousin Eddie).

Think Vertically

My life has been a whirlwind this month..for reasons I can't even begin to get into I may be moving within the next year. I actually want to move in next year, to a smaller, cozier home. I will need to refine my belongings, {my kids toys}, and get creative with storage. Thinking vertically is key to using space efficiently. I love how tall bookshelves can house most of your books, magazines, beautiful art and objects. I prefer to mix all of these. Built in books shelves are even better then free standing shelves but if you're living in a temporary space or renting you can still mount free standing tall bookshelves to the wall for the same effect/storage.
