FILMography - Matching Film Stills with Real Life

Audrey Hepburn and George Peppard from Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961)

Robert Redford and Barbra Streisand from The Way We Were (1973)

Robert Redford in Three Days of the Condor (1975)

Diane Keaton and Woody Allen from Annie Hall (1977)

Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal in When Harry Met Sally (1989)

Matt Damon and Emily Blunt in The Adjustment Bureau (2011)

Scarlett Johansson and Jeremy Renner in The Avengers (2012)

This is FILMography - a fantastic website by New York journalist, Christopher Moloney. He has recreated more than 250 film scenes around his famous city using film stills and comparing them to the real life locations. It's amazing to see from the old films what hasn't changed. Go on, have a look and find your favourite film moments.

Hobbit Fever in Wellington

The cast and crew arrive in Wellington in the Air NZ Hobbit plane yesterday.

Inside the main terminal in Wellington airport - Gollum peeks in.

The NZ Post building has a Hobbit theme.

Gandalf guarding the Embassy theatre - where the world premiere is being held.
Wellington is buzzing with Hobbit fever today as it is the world premiere of Peter Jackson's The Hobbit this afternoon at our Embassy theatre. The whole town has jumped on board to celebrate the film that has been created right here in Wellington, mainly in a suburb called Miramar.
I walked by Courtenay Place this morning (where the red carpet is) and there are many hobbit, elves and Gandalfs walking around - I fear they will roast in those woolley costumes today. So to get in the spirit, why don't you find out your hobbit name here? I did and it's Daisy Bulge of Hobbiton. Classy!

Harry Potter - Production Design

The set for the 'Room of Requirement'

These mountains of chairs had a plywood core with two layers of real furniture attached

Gringott's Bank - the marble columns are made with paper that has been dipped into trays of coloured oil and water.

The Boathouse - where Professor Snape meets his demise.
Yep, I'm happy to admit that I am a Harry Potter fan. I loved reading the series by J.K. Rowling and it was great to see them brought to life in the stunning films that were so dedicated to the books.
What is even more fascinating is finding out how the fantastical places and scenes were brought to life via the work of production designer, Stuart Craig and set decorator, Stephenie McMillan. They are both nominated for the best Art Direction at the upcoming Academy Awards. Read about how some of these great locations came about here.

Movie Inspiration - Sense and Sensibility

Scenes from Sense and Sensibility - the Dashwood family at Barton Cottage.

I have been watching old films of late and one I saw recently was Sense and Sensibility (1995), with Kate Winslet and Emma Thompson as the Dashwood sisters.
I've always enjoyed Jane Austen movies and this film has some great interiors - some very grand and others more simpler. I liked 'Barton Cottage' the most - it has great details yet still simple and homely. I'd be happy to get my hands on a place like this. What about you - do you notice the interiors when you're watching a film?

Matt Damon's apartment in Adjustment Bureau

The apartment for Matt Damon's character in The Adjustment Bureau.

The Adjustment Bureau starts here in New Zealand this weekend and I am keen to see this film. Here is the cool loft apartment for Matt Damon's character pulled together by production designer, Kevin Thompson and set decorator, Susan Bode-Tyson. They were aiming for "a very masculine, spare vibe" to suit Damon's ambitious politician role.
Remodelista has done a 'Steal this Look' chapter on this apartment - check it out here to get some hints and directions to re-create this look.

Movie Inspiration - Something Gotta Give.

The living room from the movie, Something Gotta Give.

It's funny - within one month I have a couple of new clients mention the movie, 'Something Gotta Give'. It is a American rom-com from 2003 starring Diane Keaton and Jack Nicholson and it is mainly based at a beach house in the Hamptons. When I started researching further, I found out that this house and its interiors is the most talked-about house in blog land and many people, designers and clients alike, have been inspired by this movie set.
Here are a couple of images of the living room - I can see why my clients love these luxurious, understated and homely interiors.
