Smart thinking to maximise space in a kids bedroom

I like it when people think outside the box when it comes to decoration and using our Pipe lamp as a coat hanger in a kids bedroom is great way to maximise space while displaying a few lovely dresses at the same time.

with a voice

I'm drawn to designs and fashion with an identity. Spaces that leave an impression resonate with me. I like to take risks and though I am pretty much a new englander on many levels, a part of me definitely belongs in L.A.! With that said, I love the work of  L.A. designer Wendy Schwartz, it's edgy but livable. I really can't wait to move, I'll use my place as a laboratory of sorts....I'll be sure to try a few over the top but tasteful ideas..They usually photograph beautifully. Happy Wednesday.

Let There Be Light

imageHave fun with accent lighting. Finding just the right lighting is one of the most difficult things for me as an interior designer, but when it happens it is magic. I think of the room as the perfect little black dress with the perfect cut, the one that dresses up or down according to the occasion, and the perfect lighting fixture is the jewelry that finishes off and compliments the little black dress.

imageI have written an article for West Coast Homes and Design, a supplement in the Vancouver Sun Newspaper,on how the right lighting is one of the most important aspects in achieving atmosphere in a home. Lighting is a discipline all to itself and often is one of the most important parts of an interior. Bad lighting can ruin a good interior: good lighting can almost salvage a bad one. For example….. (more)

image
In kitchens it is particularly important to get the lighting right as food preparation along with the eating and social aspects that go on in this room are a vital part of our lives and involve all of our senses. Kitchens need to be well lit with good overall ambient lighting and task lighting over islands and countertops. Add a little fun and pizazz with accent lighting as I did over this island.

image
Lighting in a bathroom and bedroom needs to make you feel refreshed and energetic in the morning, ready to face the challenges of the day ahead, but at night should engender a feeling of relaxation and harmony. In a bathroom, good lighting for putting on make-up should come evenly from either side of the mirror so shadows are not cast on the face. The rest of the room needs to be lit evenly from overhead, but be careful of placing recessed pot lights that are directly over your head when standing in front of a mirror or else you will have shadows under your eyes. I put the lights for the make-up lights and the overhead lights on different switches to further enhance the options to create different moods.

Our home in London {the Koushi lamp}

About two years ago, I fell madly in love with the Koushi lamp which was on display at concept store MERCI in Paris. The Koushi lamp was designed by Mark Eden Schooley, who is not only a talented designer but an inspiring photographer.
By the time I came back to Paris a few months later, all the Koushis had gone from MERCI.
I tried to source it to add them onto our collection of lighting on BODIE and FOU but got nowhere.
I contacted Ay Illuminate in the Netherlands as they produced a very similar lamp designed by Nelson Sepudelva but it turns out that these lamps were too fragile for mail order.
I couldn't find it anywhere in the UK and in the end, I managed to find some at Serendipity, another nice concept store for kids in Paris. Unfortunately, the size I wanted, had to be made to order and after two years of searching high and low, in the end I decided to make our own.
Steve made the frame and I sewed a light and beautiful fabric onto the wire frame. Out of respect for the designer, I will not reveal how we made it. It was not that easy to get the frame a nice rounded shape and ours is probably not as nicely finished as the real deal but it fits perfectly with the master plan I have in mind in our lounge....which is almost reaching goal...Waiting for a Paola Navone sofa (which I will not make) and all our lounge will finally be finished.

PS: The STAR window sticker is from Brume, the Feathers art print on the wall from here,  the pallet table was one of my DIY projects

In the shop this week: The BAU pendant light

It is not often that I look at a suspension lamp and think "yes this is it, this will transform my room'.
I had this with Kathleen Hills cluster light which we have now in our bedroom in London and in our house in France  and the Koushi lamp that I made for our lounge (waiting for new Paola Navone sofa to arrive to show you everything) but that's how I felt when I saw the BAU pendant light.
Designed by Vibeke Fonnesberg Schmidt the BAU* Pendant Lamp by Normann Copenhagen is a striking and sculptural lampshade that combines geometric shapes, composition and creativity that suits both minimalistic interiors and more daring houses.

Based on interlocking geometric wooden circles, sticking out in all directions, the immediate pattern of the BAU Pendant Lamp is  BAU is broken up by the discs' colours, sizes and off-centre linkages, making the lamp living and organic in its expression.
Personally I prefer the natural version because I like white and wood in my home but the coloured version looks great too.

Rabbit lamp ♥♥♥

Yesterday, my friend Mandy, Acland came around so we could finally meet Isla who is just the most gorgeous little thing!
Mandy reminded me that during the first year of the business when we were packing orders from my flat in Bristol while looking after Mila, we used to stuff our faces with chocolate muffins to cope with the volume of orders and the stress of running a small business and we used to tell Mila that 'chocolate' was called something else so she wouldn't tell her dad that we were eating chocolate during the day...Mwouahahahah

Back to the boutique... the large mushroom lamp and the Rabbit lamp are now back in stock but the Rabbit lamp is flying off. We received 15 of them on Friday and minus the pre-orders, we have now only 6 left. Once gone they'll be back in 2012.
Did you know? The Rabbit lamp is handmade in Germany and the company that manufactures them has been using the same mould since the 1960s. Sweet, isn't it?!

How to make an entrance

I've been searching for a cool way to jazz up our plain hallway for months...The space got better since we took the carpet off and painted the stairs in white but it's still missing something...
An oversized Norm 69 pendant light may well just be the answer!

In the shop this week: the MILK lamp

I had a massive crush on the work of the work of Kasper Rønn and Jonas Bjerre-Poulsen from NORM Architects since I posted about their work last year. I love/admire the interiors they create and how they use raw, natural materials such as oak, stones, concrete to create homes that exude calm, beauty, simplicity
Do you remember how gorgeous the Fredensborg home and this Copenhagen penthouse were? Anyway, one crush leading to another....the gorgeous MILK lamp they designed for &Tradition is now in the the shop.
Like the interiors NORM. create, the MILK lamp for &Tradition exudes style and beauty and provides a cosy, soothing atmosphere as you can see from the last 2 pictures taken in Hotel Skt Petri in Copenhagen (I want to stay there next time I go to Copenhagen!).
Besides its simple lines, I love the contrast created by the white translucent glass of the shade and the legs made of oak and I could see it fitting nicely next to my pallet table and Paulistano chair.
Inspired by the traditional nordic milk stool, the MILK lamp is a versatile lamp that can be used as a table lamp or floor lamp near a low-level sofa.
You can see more beautiful table lamps here and the beautiful range from &Tradition
PS: Thanks to Jonas for sending me the sketches below. I really love seeing the drawing process and the end result.

Pigeon light

This is such a nice, feminine room. I love the concrete floor, the fairy lights, the mix of vintage and fabric and how the Pigeon Light by Ed Carpenter adds a little contemporary, colourful note.
