chevron back splash

Hello, so we are sporting the new look and I am loving the change of pace around here.  It feels refreshing.

We have an empty kitchen now and have seen the plumber, electrician, and cabinet maker in a matter of just a few days.  Today they will start putting in the new cabinets and I cannot wait to see it all in action.  I will try to update my instagram with some snap shots of everything if your interested.  I am still undecided on the back splash style, I love this chevron pattern but I am afraid I would get bored of it and long for something a little simpler.  We have chosen the Chenille Vein Cut Limestone for the back splash but the sizing is very modern at 36" long.  I think we will be cutting them down to 4" x 9" tiles and running them more like a subway tile.   Any thoughts?  What do you have in your kitchen?

Dream House Alphabet: H

H is for...Hardwood Floors (of course).
Okay, if budget was no option, I'd probably opt for hardwood floors laid in a herringbone pattern in my dream house. Herringbone Hardwood for the double win double H.

Something about this look stops me every single time.

Is it too busy though? Too formal? Maybe.
More realistically, I'd love a house with some old, original hardwoods that I could refinish into perfection with character and charm (not me...the floors. I'm quite sure I'd tackle this project with something far from charm).

H was a pretty obvious choice for me. I feel like hardwood floors are on pretty much everyone's must have list these days, but there are so many options to choose from, including type of wood and finish. I like medium tones, like those pictured above. Medium tones are traditional, classic and timeless.

Light tones can really lighten up a space (duh), and are common in Scandinavian design. They work beautifully with darker toned furniture, you don't have to worry about matching!

Dark Hardwoods (think espresso) are more modern and contemporary, but I've heard they show dust very easily. Does anyone have any input on that?

What tone do you like best? And as always, I'd love to hear what your dream house 'H' is!

ps. I'm sorry about all of the unknown sources in this post, I've had some of them saved since before I was a blogger and thought to save the links! Do forgive me loves.

Zig Or Zag?

Lately it seems like I've been spotting chevron patterns everywhere I turn - on floors, on walls, on furniture - EVERYWHERE! I see it in my dreams. However, it was when I stumbled upon these lovely detail images on the Taj Mahal that I think I officially fell in love:

Aren’t those details gorgeous? From fun and bold to elegant and understated, the chevron pattern is a nice  decorative element that can add movement and depth to an interior. Its cousin, the herringbone pattern, can also achieve similar effects. The only difference between the two is that chevron consists of planks or tiles with edges that are cut at an angle while herringbone consists of rectangular planks or tiles. Thus, the chevron pattern has a distinct line (or illusion of one) running down the middle while herringbone is pieced together more like a zigzag jigsaw puzzle. A minor detail, but when you’re a design junkie it’s all about the details!

So which do you prefer? Are you Team Chevron or are you Team Herringbone?

Helllloooo Herringbone

As if the herringbone pattern wasn't sexy enough used for wooden floors, and as if Carrara marble wasn't jaw droppingly beautiful in a big ol' slab...just look at them COMBINED in a herringbone Carrara marble back splash:

I love it! Definitely filing this in my kitchenspiration folder. Another back splash that really caught my eye recently is this glass one:
Isn't it gorgeous? Modern but still classic in its own way. It reminds me of jewelery. Sparkly and lovely.
Hope you all had a lovely weekend (or are having one, if you're in Canada and are enjoying an extra day off for the May long weekend!)
