New Product Ideas

I'm sure by now that most of you how read the new issue of House of Fifty.  Well, to put it mildly, it did not disappoint!   This online magazine which is totally free is always filled to the brim with goodness.  Did I mention it's free? Yes, people, free for the taking, just click over  and enjoy all the eye candy you can stand.  It amazes me how much free design inspiration there is on line these days!

The interiors in this issue were so inspiring for me and leave to Janell and company to dig in and find some amazing new products that have really made my wheels start to turn.  Here are two products I will definitely be incorporating into some designs in the future.

Tempaper

Have you heard of this stuff?  It is removable, adjustable wallpapers.  For those of you afraid of commitment or who say to me, "I love wallpaper, but will I get tired of it," here's the solution!  Most of you know I am very practical in how I approach interior design.  I encourage my clients to keep the window treatments and large upholstered pieces neutral.  Then freshening up is easy  by simply changing out pillows with pops or color and pattern.  With this temporary wallpaper, we have another weapon in the arsenal for an easy freshen up!

Even with something like a bright chevron.  Look how fabulous this would be on an accent wall!  Then, when you get tired of it (which, let's face it, you will), all you have to do is pull it down.  Like magic!  This is also a wonderful option for dorm rooms, apartments or rentals.

Chic Shelf Paper

This is a self adhesive paper that can be used in a number of ways.  These offerings come in custom sizes and so many colors and patterns.  Consider these for the backs of bookshelves, a hutch or any glass front cabinetry.  They can add the illusion of texture and provide lots of interest you just can't emulate with paint alone.

DIY Print Art

If you're looking for an inexpensive art solution, then this is perfect for you! I made the above prints simply using some wallpaper and frames.

It's as easy as three simple steps:

STEP ONE:
Visit your local wallpaper store and ask for some samples of high end, beautiful wall paper that you think might work in your space.This will be your print...and the best part is that it is absolutely free!

I loved the demask print in the bottom left, but decided to go with the branch pattern in black and white, as well as white and purple. Plum is the accent colour in my bathroom (which is the room I was planning to hang these in), so I liked the idea of using the same print in two different colours, and my shower curtain has similar branches on it.

STEP TWO:
Buy some nice frames, make sure it has a nice matte to give the print a polished look. I went to my local Walmart and picked up these silver frames for around 20 dollars each. I liked them because they had a white matte and a smaller silver matte in the middle. Frame the wallpaper (you can use the matte to crop the image exactly where you'd like it). You can crop three different areas of the same wall paper to make each frame different, but unified and cohesive.

STEP THREE:
Hang your art! Hang your frames in whatever way you want! I chose to hang all 3 in a level row, in the pattern of black branch, purple branch, black branch. Do whatever suits your room and your style.

Metallic Wallpaper

Here's the story.  I love metallic wallpaper but in small doses!  I think it can quickly get out of hand if you don't know what you're doing.  However, when I see these papers, I sigh. . .  So, I had to share them with you.

Here is a double whammy [which is a highly technical design term] wallpaper with a metallic background and a raised flocked damask design.  I would not cover my living room in this, but I would consider it in a guest bathroom, or entryway.

This is one of my favorite sites for the real deal.  Second Hand Rose has vintage wallpapers that you simply can not find any other place.  If you are really looking for something different and edgy.  You need to bookmark this page.

This particular paper would be stunning on an accent wall in a bedroom (you would place the bed on the wall where you applied this paper).  It is hard to see the metallic quality from this picture, but if you go to the site you can see other colors that really show the sheen.

This paper would be perfect on the ceiling of a entryway or powder room.  You could also use it in the backs of a built in bookshelf for some added interest.

Here's another one that would work great on the ceiling in a special room.  Also, believe it or not, this is easier to apply than a metallic paint which shows every brush stroke and can be difficult to get right.

This paper looks like handpainted or block printed with a coppery metallic paint (reminds me of that fabulous fortuny fabric I found).  Although it is more understated than the others, it would add a very expensive touch to a powder room or accent wall.  This one is my personal favorite.

Belleza Damask Wallpaper

I sold the idea of this beautiful Schumacher wallpaper to a client for her powder room. She teared up she loved it so. My heart swelled because I was making all of her wallpaper dreams come true. Then I got a quote....I could not in good conscious talk a client into spending the equivillant of a new Lexus on wallpaper for a 4x5 room that only guests use. So I call out to you, my design friends, does anyone know of a similar, dare I say knock-off version of this? It is a grasscloth with a stenciled damask print on it. A-mazing!!! I am exploring the route of having a faux painter do the stencil on a grasscloth but thought I would ask because that makes me nervous and I predict many sleepless nights worrying about paint dripping...any thoughts would be helpful! Many thanks!

Clever Uses For Wallpaper (Part 100)

I feel like I talk about clever uses for wallpaper way too much on this blog but for all you local folks...The Habitat for Humanity store in Mt. Pleasant inherited the inventory from Carriage Trading Co. (formarly Chuck Campbell's Wallpaper) and all rolls are on sale for $1. They are pretty picked over but they do have a lot left and you can use the wallpaper for many uses other than the obvious-covering books, wrapping paper, drawer liners, to cover a bulletin board, arts and crafts, etc. Get goin'!!!
